The CGPA Formula

The CGPA formula is a weighted average calculation that accounts for both your grades and the credit hours of each course. Understanding this formula is fundamental to calculating your Cumulative Grade Point Average accurately.

CGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) / Σ Credit Hours

In plain terms: multiply each course's grade point by its credits, add them all up, and divide by total credits. This gives more weight to courses with more credit hours.

Understanding the CGPA Multiplying Factor

The CGPA multiplying factor is the number used to convert CGPA to percentage. Different institutions define this factor differently:

  • CBSE: Multiplying factor = 9.5 → Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
  • VTU: Multiplying factor = 10 → Percentage = CGPA × 10
  • Mumbai University: Formula = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10
  • JNTUH: Formula = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10
  • Anna University: Multiplying factor = 10 (post-2017 regulations)
  • GTU: Multiplying factor = 10 → Percentage = CGPA × 10
  • Makaut: Multiplying factor = 10 → Percentage = CGPA × 10
  • IPU: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10

Step-by-Step CGPA Calculation Example

Let's calculate CGPA for a student with 3 semesters:

Semester 1 (20 credits):

  • Data Structures (4 cr): A = 9 → 36
  • Mathematics (4 cr): A+ = 10 → 40
  • Physics (3 cr): B+ = 8 → 24
  • English (3 cr): A = 9 → 27
  • Lab (3 cr): A = 9 → 27
  • Elective (3 cr): B = 7 → 21

Semester 1 quality points: 175. SGPA = 175/20 = 8.75

Semester 2 (22 credits): Quality points = 187. SGPA = 8.50

Semester 3 (22 credits): Quality points = 198. SGPA = 9.00

CGPA = (175 + 187 + 198) / (20 + 22 + 22) = 560 / 64 = 8.75

CGPA to Percentage Formula

Percentage = CGPA × Multiplying Factor

Using our example: 8.75 × 9.5 (CBSE) = 83.125%

For VTU: 8.75 × 10 = 87.5%

Reverse Formula: Percentage to CGPA

CGPA = Percentage / Multiplying Factor

Example: 85% / 9.5 = 8.95 CGPA. Use our Percentage to CGPA Converter for instant results.

CGPA Formula for Different Scenarios

  • From grades: CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) / Σ Credits — CGPA Calculator
  • From SGPA: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) / Σ Credits — SGPA to CGPA
  • From marks: CGPA = (Marks/Total × 100) / Multiplier — Marks to CGPA
  • From GPA (4.0): CGPA = (GPA / 4.0) × 10 — GPA to CGPA
