What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a standardized metric that evaluates your overall academic performance across all semesters. Learning how to calculate CGPA is essential for every student โ€” whether you're tracking your progress, applying for jobs, or planning for higher education. CGPA Formula

CGPA = ฮฃ (Grade Point ร— Credits) / ฮฃ Credits

This weighted average formula multiplies each course's grade point by its credit hours, sums all values, and divides by total credits. For a detailed breakdown, see our CGPA Formula guide.

Method 1: Calculate CGPA from Grades

This is the most common method used by Indian universities:

  1. List all courses with their credit hours and grade points
  2. Multiply each grade point by its credit hours (quality points)
  3. Sum all quality points across all semesters
  4. Divide by total credit hours

Example: You took 4 courses across 2 semesters:

  • Math (4 credits): Grade A = 9 โ†’ Quality Points: 36
  • Physics (3 credits): Grade B+ = 8 โ†’ Quality Points: 24
  • English (3 credits): Grade A+ = 10 โ†’ Quality Points: 30
  • Chemistry (4 credits): Grade B = 7 โ†’ Quality Points: 28

Total Quality Points: 118. Total Credits: 14. CGPA = 118 / 14 = 8.43

Method 2: Calculate CGPA from SGPA

If you have your semester-wise SGPA values, you can calculate CGPA by taking the credit-weighted average of all SGPAs:

CGPA = ฮฃ (SGPA ร— Semester Credits) / ฮฃ Semester Credits

Example:

  • Semester 1: SGPA 8.5, Credits 20
  • Semester 2: SGPA 9.0, Credits 22
  • Semester 3: SGPA 8.2, Credits 24

CGPA = (8.5ร—20 + 9.0ร—22 + 8.2ร—24) / (20+22+24) = (170 + 198 + 196.8) / 66 = 8.56

Method 3: Calculate CGPA from Marks

If your institution uses a marks-based system, convert marks to CGPA:

CGPA = (Total Marks / Maximum Marks ร— 100) / Multiplier

Using CBSE (รท9.5): If you scored 420 out of 500, Percentage = 84%, CGPA = 84/9.5 = 8.84

Use our Marks to CGPA Calculator for this conversion.

University-Specific Methods

  • CBSE: CGPA = Average of grade points in all subjects (each graded 1-10). Percentage = CGPA ร— 9.5
  • VTU: Uses a 10-point scale with multiplier of 10. CGPA = Total quality points / Total credits
  • Anna University: Uses GPA on 10-point scale, same weighted formula. Check specific regulation year
  • SPPU: Uses credit-based system. CGPA = ฮฃ(Grade Points ร— Credits) / ฮฃ Credits
  • KTU: 10-point grading with S=10, A+=9, A=8.5, etc. Weighted average method
  • Mumbai University: Uses 10-point CGPA with (CGPA-0.75)ร—10 for percentage

Common CGPA Calculation Mistakes

  • Ignoring credit weights: Simply averaging grade points without considering credits gives wrong results
  • Mixing grading scales: Ensure all grades are on the same scale before calculating
  • Forgetting failed subjects: Failed subjects (F grade = 0) still count in CGPA calculation
  • Using wrong multiplier: Different universities have different multipliers โ€” always verify
