Understanding Grade Calculation
Grades can be calculated in different ways depending on your institution's system. The three most common methods are: simple percentage, weighted average, and point-based (GPA).
Method 1: Simple Percentage
Simply divide what you earned by the total possible and multiply by 100. Use our Grade Calculator.
Method 2: Weighted Average
When categories have different weights (e.g., Homework 20%, Exams 50%, Projects 30%), multiply each category's percentage by its weight. Use our Weighted Grade Calculator.
Example:
- Homework (20%): 95% → 0.20 × 95 = 19
- Midterm (30%): 82% → 0.30 × 82 = 24.6
- Final (50%): 88% → 0.50 × 88 = 44
Final Grade = 19 + 24.6 + 44 = 87.6%
Method 3: What Do I Need on My Final?
Use our Final Grade Calculator to find the minimum score needed on your final exam.
